The Hy-Vee Triathlon scheduled for June 22 has been moved from Des Moines, Iowa to West Des Moines because of rising flood waters and concerns about bacteria at Gray's Lake – the scheduled site of the swim for the final Olympic Trials triathlon for U.S. men and women.
Fears that Des Moines would be inundated by rising waters were spurred by record floodwaters cresting at 26-feet above normal that hit Cedar Rapids, Iowa today.
According to the Associated Press, triathlon organizers are seeking an alternative swimming venue for the elite athletes. Hy-Vee spokeswoman Chris Friesleben told the AP that the final two members of the U.S. Olympic Triathlon team will be announced after the triathlon, even if the elite swim is canceled and replaced by a run-bike-run duathlon.
Friseleben said that the triathlon will now be held on June 22 at Valley Southwoods Freshman High. Officials have arranged for alternative layouts for the run and bike splits.
Friesleben says organizers are still committed to making the June 22 Hy-Vee BG Triathlon World Cup and U.S. Olympic Qualifying event and a concurrent age group event on June 21 a traditional swim-run-bike event.
The Iowa floods threatening Des Moines mark the second major triathlon this month to be affected by adverse weather. Cold water and rains hit the June 5-8 ITU World Championship in Vancouver, Canada, causing many triathletes to drop out due to hypothermia in the Junior and Age Group contests.
