GEAR REVIEW: Camaro Speedskin

Camaro Speedskin
Camaro Speedskin

Austrian company Camaro has been cranking out watersports wear for 40 years but just brought its lineup of wetties, skins and speedsuits to American markets in 2007. While not as abundant at triathlon start lines as Fastskins or SpeedZuits, Camaro's stealthy Speedskin shouldn't be overlooked.

After one of our tri buddies kept pimping the Camaro, we thought we'd slip into a Speedskin and give it a float. Well, he wasn't so far off in his praise. First and foremost, this skin was comfy, it's Soft-skin neoprene hardly abrasive or sticky. The suit wasn't super tricky to get in and out of, either, a major perk for those speedy transitions. To be honest, we didn't bust out the stopwatch for swim-to-bike time-trials on the pool deck, but we definitely de-suited with urgency in mind. Trust us - you won't need to spray down with a can of Pam to peel this puppy off.

Another feature Camaro prides itself on is the Speedsuit's warmth. Obviouly, you want a speedie that blocks out the icebath, and from what we could tell by strokes through the pool (albeit lukewarm) and a freezing-cold shower, you're blood will keep pumping and muscles will stay loose when donning the Speedskin.

We also found range of motion to be top-notch - arm circles and extended strokes were no prob.

Overall, we think Camaro Speedsuit's a winner. Besides, it has the totally unquantifiable and completely subjective perk of looking pretty darn hip poolside. We can only imagine how she'll shine at a chilly, early-morning swim start.
